In an increasingly competitive application market many companies are adopting advertising as a means of increasing the revenue of their free/paid applications. While few, if any, paid applications have in-app advertising this is definitely true for freely distributed apps. The concept is simple. Advertisers pay you based on the number of downloads your free app gets (viewers) and how often that group clicks through various ad mechanisms.
The most talked about provider is Ad Mob. Their API is simple and direct though they only service the iPhone platform at this time. The pro’s are that they have an established group of advertising partners so you’re garaunteed to get paid – even if it’s only a few bucks. Their main competitor appears to be Mobclix which has taken a different approach to the problem entirely.
Developers sign up for Mobclix and present their ad offerings. The advertisers then ‘bid’ on the available spots based on age, gender and a variety of other statistics about your application user base and popularity.
Originally an analytics company you can be certain that Mobclix will be looking to provide lots of metrics on performance and earnings to their customers which may make them more attractive to some. While AdMob is still the largest network MobClix has signed up over 20 ad Networks including Google AdSense and Yahoo Mobile.
